SFUO Statement on the Death of Mauril Bélanger

August 17, 2016

It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Mauril Bélanger, former President of the Student Federation (1977-1979), Member of Parliament for our riding of Ottawa-Vanier for 21 consecutive years, and proud defender of the French language in Ontario.

The SFUO Executive would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Bélanger, as well as thank him for his hard work throughout his political career, be it here at the Fed or in the House of Commons. Mr Bélanger has been an integral part, not only of our Student Federation, but also of our entire political system, proudly representing the students that live in his riding.

Elected to the House of Commons in 1995, Mr Bélanger leaves behind a rich heritage of which Franco-Ontarians can be proud. Appointed to the Cabinet under the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, he held many ministerial positions, including Minister responsible Official Languages, where he demonstrated his commitment towards federal bilingualism and Canada’s francophonie once again.

“Yesterday, we not only lost one of our alumni, our MP, and a defender of la francophonie, but also a kind-hearted human being,” said Francesco MacAllister-Caruso, VP Services and Communications at the SFUO. “The work that Mr Bélanger has accomplished will continue to inspire future generations to fight for their rights. We couldn’t have asked for a better representative within federal politics.”

Thank you once again, Mr Bélanger, for your service throughout all these years. The student community will be forever grateful.
