Why should I join an SFUO Club?

All of the clubs recognized by the SFUO play a vital role in student life on campus. They reflect the great diversity of our student population at the University of Ottawa and serves as a centerpiece that brings together a multitude of students with similar interests, backgrounds and ambitions. 
For many students, particularly those of you entering the university community for the first time, clubs can be something of a home away from home, giving you the opportunity to make connections with people with whom you share things in common.

Our clubs offer so much to students; among their many activities, they host guest lecturers, organize sport and ski trips, movie nights, hold cultural and religious celebrations, host and participate in different tournaments, organize awareness campaigns regarding political and social issues, and provide forums for discussion and socializing.

You would have access to:

  • 15 free room bookings per semester for club activities
  • up to $1000 in subsidies for club activities
  • free multimedia bookings on the weekends
  • access to free dance studio time
  • a free color banner
  • office and storage space

Of the benefits above, there are a multitude of other resources to ensure that your club experience is a success.

How do I start an SFUO Club?

Creating an SFUO Club is really quite simple! All you have to do is follow these 8 steps:

  • Step 1. Think of an idea for a club. This can be something that you come up with on your own or something that comes out of talking to your friends and fellow students.
  • Step 2. Formulate a mandate for your club. You should be able to boil down the “raison d’être” of your club to a few sentences or a short paragraph. This will help you be able to explain to others what you’d like to do with this club. In order to be approved for a club, your mandate must be different from any club that currently exists within the SFUO. All current club mandates are available at the Club Registration page.
  • Step 3. Start talking about it. Talk to friends and fellow students to see if they’d be interested in getting involved in the kind of club that you’re thinking of starting.
  • Step 4. Take a look at the Clubs Manual available on the website. This will answer all kinds of questions you might have about what you can get out of starting a club and the resources available to you once you do.
  • Step 5. Sign people up! Print off the Support Form (Form B) from the Club Registration page. Get at least 15 people who are interested in the club to sign the support form.
  • Step 6. Write a constitution. Each SFUO club needs its own constitution. A sample version is available on the Club Registration webpage.
  • Step 7. Create your executive committee. Based on the executive positions created in your constitution, make sure you have agreed on people to fill them. Designating executives is only allowed for the first year of operation for a club. Your constitution must outline for electing people to these positions in subsequent years.
  • Step 8. Submit your Registration Form (Form A) online at Club Registration. Bring your completed Support Form (Form B), Waiver Form (Form C), $35 registration fee and check list to the SFUO office. Also, submit an electronic version of your constitution to clubs@sfuo.ca.

Et voila! Now all you have to do is wait for your club application to be reviewed by the SFUO and you’ll be set to enter the world of the SFUO clubs system!

The SFUO is home to over 175 different clubs, from 6 categories:

What kind of funding is available for clubs? How do I apply for it?

What is the Clubs Committee?

A Clubs committee is established, among other things, to review, approve or reject, requests by new Club applicants for certification and requests by certified Clubs for subsidies from the SFUO.
The Clubs Committee shall be composed of the following members:

  • The Vice President Student Affairs;
  • The Vice President Finance;
  • The comptroller general of the Student Federation;
  • The Clubs Coordinator of the Student Federation; and
  • A representative from GSAED.

How do I book a room? a table?

Clubs are eligible to 15 rooms free of charge per semester. For free access to multimedia equipment, you can book Montpetit 202/203 on the weekends. Requests for room bookings should be submitted at least 5 business days prior to the proposed event.

Clubs are eligible to 10 free tables for promotion in the University Centre. Requests for table bookings must be submitted at least 5 business days prior to the proposed event.

How do I obtain a free colour banner?

All new clubs have access to a free 2 X 3 feet colour banner for free! You can create your own image and save it in a jpeg, gif, pdf file. Make sure that the dimensions are 2 x 3 and the resolution 200dpi. Once your image complete, send it to clubs@sfuo.ca

There are design programs in the computers at the Clubs Room which can be used.
