Advocacy
The goal of this stream is to foster ongoing dialogue between students, the University of Ottawa and its partners, the SFUO and its member bodies. The Bilingualism Centre will advocate the linguistic rights of students at the University administration. Linguistic rights are evolving and must reflect students’ current and future needs. As such, the Centre will ensure that linguistic concerns are evident to members of the SFUO. With the involvement of the Centre, the linguistic needs of individuals will become community issues. The Centre will engage in advocacy based on the comments and concerns of the university community in accordance with the policies and principles of the SFUO.
Students are occasionally intimidated by the prospect of filing complaints with the university administration. In some cases, students are deterred by the extensive administrative procedures involved in filing language-related complaints or simply do not know where to direct their concerns. Some students are unsure of how to proceed or are discouraged by the limited impact produced by their individual actions. Other simply do not insist on receiving services in their first language because they understand both official languages (either partially or completely). In order to ensure that these students’ needs are met, the Advocacy stream will bring their efforts together in order to advance the bilingualism cause.
