Exemptions

Although the program is universal, meaning all full-time uOttawa students studying at uOttawa in Ottawa and Gatineau are charged, there are some cases where you could be exempted. Please note that these are currently the only options for being exempted from the program.

Outside OC Transpo Transit Area

OC Transpo Urban and Rural Transit Areas

“I reside outside the OC Transpo Transit Service Area for the duration of the school year while attending full-time classes at uOttawa.”

Necessary Documentation:

  • A current rental agreement or lease (bail), OR
  • A valid driver’s licence, OR
  • A current utility bill with your name, the address and the date

Outside STO Transit Area

“I reside outside the STO Service Area for the duration of the school year while attending full-time classes at uOttawa.”

Necessary Documentation:

  • A current rental agreement or lease (bail), OR
  • A valid driver’s licence, OR
  • A current utility bill with your name, the address and the date

Exchange

“I am going on an exchange outside of Canada for 60 days or more during the Fall Semester and/or a separate 60 days or more during the Winter Semester.”

Please note that it is 60 days per semester. That means if you are going on an exchange for the full year. For example, it must be 60 days in our Fall Semester and a separate 60 days in our Winter Semester. If you are only going away for one semester, you will only be exempted for that semester.

Necessary Documentation:

  • A letter of acceptance with your name, the location and the dates of your exchange
    • Must be a confirmed acceptance letter, not an offer
    • A letter from the person in charge of your exchange with your name, the location and the dates of your exchange

Internship

“I am participating in an internship outside the city of Ottawa and Gatineau for 60 days or more during the Fall Semester and/or a separate 60 days or more during the Winter Semester.”

Please note that it is 60 days per semester. That means if you are participating in an internship for the full year. For example, it must be 60 days in our Fall Semester and a separate 60 days in our Winter Semester. If you are only going away for one semester, you will only be exempted for that semester.

If you are a medical student going away for your medical electives, you can use your clinical electives sheet as proof, but we will count the dates listed, and they must add up to 60 days or more in each semester.

Necessary Documentation:

Within North America

  • A letter of acceptance with your name, the location and the dates of your exchange
  • A letter from the person in charge of your exchange with your name, the location and the dates of your internship

Outside North America

  • No supporting documentation necessary
    • We receive a list from the university that confirms your internship

Coop

“I am participating in a cooperative work program outside the city of Ottawa and Gatineau for 60 days or more during the Fall Semester and/or a separate 60 days or more during the Winter Semester.”

Please note that it is 60 days per semester. That means if you are participating in a cooperative work program for the full year. For example, it must be 60 days in our Fall Semester and a separate 60 days in our Winter Semester. If you are only going away for one semester, you will only be exempted for that semester.

Necessary Documentation:

  • No supporting documentation needed
    • We receive a list from the COOP Office to confirm your work term

Research/Completing Thesis

“I am conducting research/completing my thesis outside the city of Ottawa and Gatineau for 60 days or more during the Fall Semester and/or a separate 60 days or more during the Winter Semester.”

Please note that it is 60 days per semester. That means you will be away for the full year. For example, it must be 60 days in our Fall Semester and a separate 60 days in our Winter Semester. If you are only going away for one semester, you will only be exempted for that semester.

This option also applies to students who are living outside the city of Ottawa and Gatineau because they have completed their on-campus courses.

Necessary Documentation:

  • An official letter or email from your supervisor confirming that are you doing research or completing your thesis outside the city of Ottawa and Gatineau for 60 days or more during the Fall Semester and/or a separate 60 days or more during the Winter Semester

Part-Time/Unregistered

“I have dropped down to part-time, or am no longer registered, as a student at the University of Ottawa.”

Did you enroll, and then withdraw from your studies? Did you drop down to part-time status? If so, you are no longer eligible for the program. If you picked up your card, you must return it in order to get a reimbursement. If you apply for an exemption before the Fall deadline, you can get a full reimbursement. If you apply for an exemption before the Summer deadline, you can get a full reimbursement.

Necessary Documentation:

  • Returning your card if it was picked up
  • We check university records to verify your registration status

CNIB

“I am a member of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.”

Necessary Documentation:

  • Your CNIB identification card

Doctor’s Note

“I have an official note from a medical practitioner that specifies that I cannot ride the bus, including ParaTranspo”

The note must specify that you cannot ride the bus, including ParaTranspo. This is because ParaTranspo is included in the U-Pass. If you are able to use ParaTranspo, then you cannot be exempted from the program.

Necessary Documentation:

  • An official note from a medical practitioner that specifies that you cannot ride the bus, including ParaTranspo
